How book metadata affects discoverability

Metadata is the information that travels with a book to every store and catalogue. Search systems read it before any reader does.

The fields that do the most work

Subtitle, subject categories and the description are indexed by retailer search. Specific categories place a book where interested readers browse; broad ones bury it.

Contributor names must be spelled the same way on every edition so ebook, print and audio link together under one author.

Writing the description

Open with what the book is about and who it is for. Keep claims factual. Mention the genre and setting in plain words, because those are the terms people type.

Keeping it current

Update the record when a book wins genuine recognition, gets a new edition or gains an audiobook. Old or conflicting records across retailers are a common cause of lost sales.

Discuss your book internationally

Send the manuscript details and the markets you have in mind. We reply with an honest assessment, not a sales pitch.
